Remnants of The Past show….

There’s just a few more weeks until the Remnants of The Past Antique Show. I can’t believe that I was there shopping last October, and in June, I’m going to be a vendor. I am beyond excited. (Thank you Judy!) In case you missed my post last fall, you can catch up now. This year’s show is June 2nd and 3rd. You can find out more by stopping by theĀ  Remnants of the Past website. I’ve been a very busy bee creating what I hope will be a really exciting and unique booth. See you at the show!

Remember Dorothy’s face in The Wizard of Oz, when she opens the door and sees the colorful, enchanting world of Oz? That was me Saturday morning as I passed thru the doorway into The Remnants of The Past Show. I’d been dying to come to this show ever since I heard about it last year, and it was everything I had hoped it would be, and then some! Is there something in the water here in California, because for being up so early, every vendor had a smile and was thrilled to be there. Unlike many antique shows where anyone can set up a booth, creator Judy Watkins hand-picks each vendor from a long list of submissions. One after another, the booths were gorgeous! I had to do a few laps before I could start shopping because I was so overwhelmed when I walked in. I took hundreds of photos, everything was so breathtaking. It was hard to choose which to post. But here are some of my favorites:

The displays were incredible!

I loved these clock faces

Are you speechless yet?

In addition to beautiful vintage finds, many of the vendors had gorgeous handmade items.

One booth had little packets of old letters tied with twine, which I loved.

This booth had gorgeous displays of French baskets, urns, bistro chairs and garden items.

Ian snapped this one of me.

Loved this HOLLYWOOD sign!

Antique baskets from France.

More beautiful antique garden planters

Kymberley Brown Fraser’s booth A Beautiful Mess was absolutely stunning.

Ian took this one of Kym and I.

This was your first view when you entered the show.

The outdoor vendors really played up their location by using lots of plants and flowers in their displays.

I snagged this painting from A Beautiful Mess the minute I walked into the show.

This table was wonderful. It’s an old apothecary cabinet.

I almost bought these chairs, even though I have no place for them!

These are old olive colanders from France.

Glass jars filled with tea-stained sheet music.

It was a truly wonderful day. And it was so lovely to see so many people I knew and to make some new friends along the way. After the show, My husband I did some wine tasting and had some wonderful meals. See you at the next show!

I’m back home. I am so jet-lagged and exhausted. I usually spend lots of time editing my photos, but the light in Paris is captivating and beautiful at certain times of the day. To alter it would be a shame. I have so many blog posts coming about the wonderful things I’ve seen, but here is a smattering of the past ten days….lots more to come!

Eliza and I in The Tuileries. I was too scared to go on the ferris wheel!

This next photo isn’t so you can see me posing. Look behind me on the left and you’ll see Eliza, running up to a complete stranger and saying “Hi!” She did this all week to everyone, everywhere we went. The stuffiest shop girls were no match for Eliza. Nothing funnier than watching a poker-faced Parisian waiter suddenly turn into a pile of mush when charmed by The Bean.

Luxembourg gardens on a Friday afternoon.

Standing on the bridge overlooking the Seine.

The Tulieries at sunset. The light is just beautiful!

Roses for sale.

Cookies spilling out of their display cases on Rue St. Honore.

How much is the urn? They are all over Luxembourg gardens….

Vintage French linens in a brocante shop in the Marais.

Monet’s water lilies….

Ian and Eliza taking a break in the park.

The view of the ferris wheel from Rue St Honore.

Well, I’m here in La Jolla for my second summer vacation. The beautiful homes, the gorgeous shops, the restaurants on the beach. The cove with squealing seals, the surfers riding the waves as dawn breaks. Is it a dream? Nope. It’s all real. And for a town where the median house price is 7 million, La Jolla is decidedly unpretentious and cozy. Stop into the local CVS, where a college student behind the counter might ask you “How’s your day going?” Really? Never would happen in New York. People stop their cars to let people cross the street, waiters really want to know where you’re from. The cashier at the grocery store asks “Would you like help to your car?” Well, thats pretty amazing when you’re only carrying a bag with crackers and a yogurt in it. It’s easy to see why people here are so nice. It’s slow, breezy and beautiful all year round. There’s a respect for the climate, for the sea and for each other.

The same holds true for the neighborhood antique shops. They may seem intimidating and “high end”, but make no mistake, everyone here is happy to help and really nice. My favorite store in La Jolla is Girard Avenue Collection. I met the owner Shannon Turner last year when I was dragging my 8 year old and a newborn Eliza around La Jolla. I was thick into my chemotherapy treatments. I probably looked like a mess. Yet when I walked into the store, I might as well have been the Queen of England. Shannon greeted me kindly, cooed over my baby and entertained my son while I shopped. And what a gorgeous shop! Shannon and her fellow staff have created a series of beautiful vignettes throughout the warehouse style space. Different “rooms” flow through the store that are simply beautiful. A cottage style zinc topped door turned into a long dining table that’s covered in green topiaries, an elegant linen covered sofa matched with a recycled coffee table and handblown champagne flutes. Piles of coral, oil paintings of the beach that draw their inspiration from an earlier time, mercury glass that shimmers in the light. It’s all stunning. Pick out all of your treasures and Shannon will arrange shipping for you. After my visit Shannon gave me a big hug, and I was so touched. I’m looking forward to furnishing my new home with some great finds from this gorgeous store. Don’t miss it.
